Charlotte Harbor, Florida’s second largest natural harbor estuary, which was formed by the blending of saltwater through Boca Grande Pass and the Gulf of Mexico with freshwater from the Peace River and Myakka River. This combination creates an ecosystem that is like no other in the state. With prevailing south west winds off the Gulf and strong tidal currents, the areas surrounding the harbor are millions of years in the making. It has become nature’s maze of mangroves islands, oyster bars, and deep channels bordered by miles of fertile grass flats. These surrounding areas are called “sounds”, and support some of the best inshore game fishing in the state. With 850 miles of shoreline, 84% of which is state preserve lands and habitat, and 28 miles of sandy shoreline beaches, Snook, Redfish, Tarpon, and Trout make Charlotte Harbor their home year round.
Picture yourself on the bow of a boat with the sun cresting over the horizon of endless mangroves, being quietly poled towards a Redfish tailing with one thing on its mind, and that is breakfast. Or casting top water plugs, for Snook, that are in potholes, waiting to ambush their next meal that happens to swim overhead. The last would be intercepting a slow moving school of Tarpon in crystal clear Gulf water, waiting for the right shot to get your fly in front of a “silver king”. All these are daily scenarios that we find ourselves in, here on Charlotte Harbor, I invite you to come and experience everything that makes South West Florida a wonderful fishing destination.
